From : Joy Thibault (Née Gye) 16.8.91 "All I know is that Charles Gye (my Dad's father) was listed as being a 'Gentleman' and according to Dad had a large property in the South Island where he bred thoroughbred horses. In fact, Dad said they could "all ride before they could walk". When I was a little girl Grandma Gye came to stay with us in Sydney and my childish recolleciton was of a very severe and autocratic little lady. Aunt Milly (Amelia) also stayed a fair time with us as did Uncle Ted (who we always knew as Edward Evelyn). He, like all the uncles, was a darling, as was Uncle George (who was a brilliant journalist: he was editor of the then Evening News and after he was divorced, went to New York where he became Literary Editor of the New York Times). He had two sons : William (now a grazier but by profession a consulting engineer) : and Richard who is now a Professor of Neuro-surgery and was Dean of Medicine of Sydney University until retirement. Uncle Ted had two girls and two boys. One girl, Maureen, married a Judge's son who was a doctor. I stayed with them for some time (after Dad died) recovering from a breakdown. Jean, the other girl, now looks after her mother (Aunt Mary) who was a hospital matron and at 92 was still playing Championship Lawn Bowls. She and Jean and her husband went on a cruise in the Pacific and old Auntie assured me she was packing her bikini! All the Gye men have, or had, lovely plummy English voices and are, or were, extremely kindly and affectionate." |
