Charlie and Lillian were married at St Patrick's Cathedral in East Melbourne on the 28th March, 1928. The marriage was made by dispensation as Lillian was not Catholic.

As the son of an immigrant Italian businessman who took out Australian citizenship, a mixed marriage may have been a perfectly acceptable match for Charlie. But rumours about Lil and Charlie's friend, Robert Gye, may have been fuelled by the fact that Lillian was not 'of the faith'.
