Joan Elizabeth Gye (née Inglis), David Gye's second wife, was born in North London on the 16th of January, 1938. She was the first child of Charles and Elizabeth Ebsworth. After a number of turbulent years in London, she was evacuated to live with relatives in the United States. She was educated in the U.K. and in America and graduated from college.

Returning to London as an adult, she met Andrew Lockwood, an Australian. Their child, Bradford, was born in Wimbledon, England in 1962. Andrew, an architect, returned to Australia and Joan followed soon after with Brad. However, upon her arrival in Australia, she found herself left alone with Brad. Andrew, it seems, was already married.

Alone and in a foreign country, Joan had to find a way for herself and her young son. She had no family to support her and it must have been a time of great disillusionment for her. Single parenthood has always been a difficult endeavor.

Joan and David met in 1968 at the home of a mutual friend. David was newly separated from Gloria. Their mutual interests in films and music brought them together.

Greg Gye was born on the 4th of February, 1971. Joan and David married later that year.

I remember the first time I met Joan and Brad. I was five years old and extremely jealous of my relationship with my father. I know now what a hard time I gave them both.

Brad died from a brain aneurysm in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1993 at the age of 30. I'll always regret that I never really got to know him. I couldn't, while he was alive, forgive him for being fortunate enough to live with my father - something he certainly never had any choice about. By the time I had learned to accept Joan and Brad as my family, Brad was dead. It haunts me that we never managed to be friends.
