John was born in Little Lon during the first world war and grew up around the city. He lived and worked with his father, Robert, in Robert's various businesses doing a variety of jobs. After Robert died in 1942, he continued living with Lillian, David and June until he moved to Heyfield in 1949. He lived and worked as a barman at the Railway Hotel. He also ran a cafe in Heyfield. He died in a nursing home in Dromana.

John never married and was a faithful brother and stepson. He was interested in books and read the classics avidly. He also remained devoutly Catholic throughout his life. He was extremely fond of his young half-brother, David, and would take him to the Society Restaurant for lunch when David was a small boy. But, apart from this irregular indulgence, it would be fair to describe him as an ascetic.
