Born: 17 March, 1914, 32 Cumberland Place, Melbourne Mother: Kate McDonald
Father: Robert (Wong) Gye John was born in Little Lon during the first world war and grew up around the city. He lived and worked with his father, Robert, in Robert's various businesses doing a variety of jobs. After Robert died in 1942, he continued living with Lillian, David and June until he moved to Heyfield in 1949. He lived and worked as a barman at the Railway Hotel. He also ran a cafe in Heyfield. He died in a nursing home in Dromana. John never married and was a faithful brother and stepson. He was interested in books and read the classics avidly. He also remained devoutly Catholic throughout his life. He was extremely fond of his young half-brother, David, and would take him to the Society Restaurant for lunch when David was a small boy. But, apart from this irregular indulgence, it would be fair to describe him as an ascetic.
