Robert, known as Bobby, was only three when his mother, Catherine, died. His grandmother, Catherine, played a large role in his early childhood. Marie Hayes, his half-sister, has fond memories of shared book reading with Bobby and he remained close to his brother, Johnny, throughout his life.
