Taken from Windows
on a Chinese Past by James Ng.
"Charles and Harriet Wong Gye had eleven children
who reached adulthood. The eldest, Albert Ernest Gye, was prominent in
Clyde gymnastic, football and cycling clubs and at the turn of the century
was printer and publisher of the Dunstan Times. He was mentioned in 1893
as a footballer, and in 1900 as a delegate for the Clyde Rugby Football
Club. He was a sharebroker during the great gold-dredging boom at the
turn of the century.68 I am told that his sister Amy married Thomas Mooney,
who worked for newspapers in Riverton, Alexandra and Wanganui before becoming
a senior staff member on the Dominion. Her brother Henry was a sharebroker
and commission agent and the only one of the children mentioned by Don,
who called him a 'precious fellow'. My first reference of him dates to
1886, when he passed the Junior Civil Service examination. In 1893, he
became an agent in Clyde for a Christchurch bicycle manufacturer. He went
to Dunedin, was jailed for false pretences, and was thought to have fled
from his financial past to America. Arthur Gye was the local carpenter
and paperhanger, who advertised extensively. William Wong Gye, the only
son who retained 'Wong' in his name, was known as the 'Old Man Rock' of
Clyde. He was a foundation member of the Clyde Horticultural Society,
an orchardist and handyman and a long-serving member of the local Domain
Board. At his funeral it was said of him - and many Europeans agreed -
that: 'Billy Gye was the best man I have ever known'. Recently, an Australian
descendant of Charles Wong Gye returned to Otago to trace his roots. He
had understood 'Gye' was a French name and was incredulous
to learn the truth. He and several other Australian Gyes are in the
professions."
According to genealogical records collected by Jocelyn Wilson (see below),
Henry not Albert was the eldest.
